Getting Started & Choosing a System

What is a rooftop solar system and how does it work?
Solar panels on your roof turn sunlight into DC electricity. An inverter converts it to AC power that runs your lights, fans, fridge and AC. In an on-grid system, any extra power goes to the grid through a net meter and is credited on your bill.

It depends on how often your power goes out and whether you need backup.
– On-grid: connected to the DISCOM grid, no batteries. Lowest cost, best savings and eligible for the PM Surya Ghar subsidy. Best where power cuts are rare.
– Hybrid: grid-connected with batteries. You save on bills and keep essential loads running during outages.
– Off-grid: runs on panels and batteries only. Suited to farms, remote sites or places with long daily outages.
Most homes in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and other cities choose on-grid. Our team recommends the right type after a free site survey.

Check your last 6 to 12 months of electricity bills for average monthly units. As a rough guide:
– Up to 150 units/month: 1 kW
– 150 to 300 units: 2 kW
– 300 to 450 units: 3 kW
– 450 to 600 units: 4 to 5 kW
– 600+ units: 5 kW and above
In Odisha, 1 kW of panels typically generates around 4 units a day, or roughly 110 to 130 units a month. Final sizing depends on your roof space and shading.

Modern panels are 540 to 600 watts each, so a 3 kW system usually needs 5 to 6 panels and a 5 kW system needs 9 to 10. The exact count depends on the panel wattage we select for your roof.
Plan for roughly 80 to 100 sq ft of shade-free area per kW. A 3 kW system needs about 250 to 300 sq ft. Water tanks, staircase rooms and parapet shadows are excluded from usable space.
Monocrystalline panels (Mono PERC and newer TOPCon) are the standard for homes today. They give more power per square foot and handle heat and low light better. Bifacial panels can add extra generation on elevated structures. We use BIS-certified, ALMM-listed panels so your system stays subsidy-eligible.
A correctly sized on-grid system can offset most of your daytime consumption — many customers see bill reductions of 70–90%.

G-Volt is an Odisha-based solar company with hubs in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela, serving all 30 districts. We handle everything: site survey, design, quality components, installation, DISCOM paperwork, subsidy application and after-sales AMC.

Cost, Subsidy & Savings

How much does a rooftop solar system cost in Odisha?
A residential on-grid system typically costs Rs 55,000 to Rs 70,000 per kW before subsidy, including panels, inverter, structure, wiring, earthing and installation. A 3 kW system is usually Rs 1.6 to Rs 2 lakh. Hybrid systems cost more because of batteries. Book a free site survey for an exact quote.

Odisha homeowners get two subsidies on top of each other: the central PM Surya Ghar subsidy and the state top-up from the Odisha government.
– 1 kW: Rs 30,000 (central) + Rs 25,000 (Odisha) = Rs 55,000
– 2 kW: Rs 60,000 (central) + Rs 50,000 (Odisha) = Rs 1,10,000
– 3 kW and above: Rs 78,000 (central) + Rs 60,000 (Odisha) = Rs 1,38,000
Subsidy is capped at the 3 kW level, so a 5 kW or 10 kW home system receives the same Rs 1,38,000. Amounts are set by government order and can change.

With up to Rs 1,38,000 in combined subsidy, the effective cost of a 3 kW on-grid system can come down to well under Rs 1 lakh. You pay the full price first; the subsidy is credited to your bank account after the system is commissioned.
You are generally eligible if you are a residential electricity consumer in Odisha with your own connection, a roof you own or have rights to, and you have not claimed a rooftop solar subsidy before. The system must be on-grid, use DCR (made-in-India) panels and be installed by a registered vendor. Commercial and industrial connections are not covered by PM Surya Ghar.
Register on pmsuryaghar.gov.in with your consumer number, apply for rooftop solar, choose a registered vendor and get DISCOM feasibility approval. After installation and net-meter fitting, the DISCOM inspects the system and the subsidy is released by Direct Benefit Transfer. G-Volt handles the paperwork for you from start to finish.

– Latest electricity bill (3-6 months)
– Aadhaar card and a photo ID
– Bank account details or a cancelled cheque (Aadhaar-linked)
– Proof of property ownership or roof rights
– Passport-size photograph
– Mobile number linked to Aadhaar

The central subsidy is usually credited within about a month of the commissioning report being uploaded. The Odisha top-up follows its own release cycle. Timelines depend on DISCOM inspection and portal processing.
The subsidy applies to the grid-connected solar capacity. Batteries are not subsidised, so a hybrid system costs more out of pocket.
A correctly sized on-grid system can offset most of your daytime consumption, and many homes see bills fall by 70 to 90%. For example, a G-Volt 3 kW on-grid home saves about Rs 2,600 a month, and a 5 kW hybrid home in Patia saves about Rs 4,200 a month.
With Odisha’s combined subsidy and net metering, most homes recover their cost in about 3 to 5 years. After that, the system keeps generating nearly free power for 20+ years.
Yes. Banks offer rooftop solar loans linked to PM Surya Ghar at low interest, and EMI options are available. In many cases the monthly EMI is close to or less than the bill savings. Ask our team for current financing partners.

Installation, Approvals & Net Metering

What is G-Volt's solar installation process?

1. Share your requirement: send your electricity bill and basic property details.
2. Free site survey: we check roof space, shading, direction, structure strength and cable routes.
3. Solar plan and quote: system size, components, layout and expected savings, explained clearly.
4. Approvals: subsidy registration and DISCOM feasibility, handled by us.
5. Installation: mounting structure, panels, wiring, inverter, earthing and surge protection.
6. Net meter and commissioning: DISCOM fits the net meter, inspects and commissions the system.
7. Handover and support: monitoring setup, warranty documents and after-sales AMC.

The physical installation of a home system takes 1 to 3 days. The full journey, including DISCOM approval, net-meter fitting and commissioning, usually takes 3 to 6 weeks depending on the DISCOM’s schedule.
Grid-connected systems need approval from your local Tata Power DISCOM: TPCODL (central Odisha, including Bhubaneswar and Cuttack), TPWODL (western Odisha, including Rourkela and Sambalpur), TPSODL (southern Odisha, including Berhampur) or TPNODL (northern Odisha, including Balasore). G-Volt submits the application and coordinates the inspection for you.
A net meter is a bi-directional meter that records power you draw from the grid and power your solar system exports. During the day, your home uses solar first and sends the surplus to the grid. At night you draw from the grid. You pay only for the net units consumed.
No, when done correctly. We use anchoring and sealing methods suited to your roof and keep drainage outlets clear. On RCC roofs we can also use raised or ballasted structures that leave space for cleaning and roof use underneath.
Yes. Metal-sheet roofs use special clamps or rail systems that fix to the purlins without drilling leaks. The sheet’s condition is checked during the survey.
Every G-Volt installation includes proper earthing, DC and AC surge protection devices (SPDs), correctly rated breakers, UV-resistant cabling in conduits and, where needed, a lightning arrester. Before handover we test polarity, string voltage, insulation resistance and earthing continuity.

Roof, Performance & Odisha Weather

Which direction should solar panels face?
In Odisha, south-facing panels give the highest yearly generation. East-west layouts also work well on roofs where south isn’t possible, with a modest drop in output. We design the layout around your roof during the survey.
Odisha lies between roughly 18 and 22 degrees north latitude, so a tilt of about 15 to 20 degrees facing south works best for year-round generation. Raised structures also improve airflow, which keeps panels cooler and more efficient.
Yes, significantly. Even partial shade from a water tank, tree or neighbouring building can cut a string’s output. We map shade between 9 AM and 4 PM during the survey and place panels to avoid it.
Yes, but generation drops. Panels work on daylight, not heat, so they still produce on cloudy days at a lower level. Strong summer and winter months make up for monsoon dips, and net-metering credits balance your bill across the year.
Yes, when the structure is designed for it. For coastal districts like Puri, Ganjam, Balasore, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur, G-Volt uses structures rated for high wind-speed zones, heavier anchoring and proper bolt torque. Panels themselves are tested for strong wind and snow loads.
Near the coast we use hot-dip galvanised (HDGI) or aluminium structures and stainless-steel fasteners that resist rust. Annual AMC checks catch any early corrosion.
Very high panel temperatures cause a small drop in output, a few percent on the hottest days. Mono PERC and TOPCon panels handle heat better than older panels, and raised mounting with good airflow reduces the loss.
Your roof should be repaired and waterproofed before installation, as the system will stay up for 25 years. Our survey team checks roof condition and load-bearing capacity and tells you if any work is needed first.

Batteries, Power Cuts & Appliances

Does solar work during a power cut?
An on-grid system switches off automatically during a grid outage. This anti-islanding feature protects line workers repairing the grid. If you need power during cuts, choose a hybrid or off-grid system with batteries.
Yes. Most homes choose on-grid systems without batteries because they cost less and give the best savings. Add batteries only if backup during outages matters to you.
Yes, if you plan for it. Choosing a hybrid inverter at the start makes it easy to add batteries later without replacing equipment.
Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries last longer, need no maintenance, charge faster and take less space, but cost more upfront. Tubular lead-acid batteries are cheaper but need water top-ups and replacement sooner. We recommend based on your backup hours and budget.
Yes. A 3 kW system can run a 1 to 1.5 ton AC along with regular household loads during sunny hours. For multiple ACs or night-time cooling, you need a larger system, grid support or battery backup.
Everything that runs on grid power: lights, fans, TV, refrigerator, washing machine, water pump, geyser, induction cooktop and AC. The system just needs to be sized for your total load.
Run heavy appliances like the washing machine, water pump, iron and geyser during daylight hours, when your panels are generating. This uses more of your own solar power directly.

Maintenance, Amc, Warranty & Lifespan

How long do solar panels last?

Warranties come from the component manufacturers and vary by brand. Typical terms:
– Solar panels (performance): 25 to 30 years
– Solar panels (product): 10 to 12 years
– Inverter: 5 to 10 years
– Lithium battery: 5 to 10 years
– Mounting structure: 5 to 10 years
G-Volt also provides an installation workmanship warranty. Your exact warranty terms are listed in your quote and handover documents.

Very little. Clean the panels with plain water and a soft cloth or mop every 2 to 3 weeks, more often in dusty areas or after dry spells. Avoid detergents, abrasive brushes and high-pressure jets. Check your monitoring app for any sudden drop in generation.
Dust, bird droppings and leaves can reduce output by 10 to 15% or more if panels are left uncleaned for long. Regular cleaning brings generation back to normal.

Our Annual Maintenance Contract keeps your system safe and efficient. It typically covers scheduled panel cleaning, inspection of wiring, connectors and earthing, structure and bolt checks, inverter health checks, generation analysis and priority breakdown support.
Most inverters come with a mobile app or display that shows daily and monthly generation. If output drops suddenly, the usual causes are dirt, new shading, a loose connection or an inverter alert. Call us and our team will diagnose it.
Yes. G-Volt’s AMC and repair services are available for existing solar systems across Odisha, whoever installed them.

Commercial, Industrial, Pumps & Street Lights

Is solar worth it for shops, offices, hospitals and schools?
Yes. Commercial buildings use most of their power during the day, exactly when solar generates, and pay higher tariffs than homes. That makes savings and payback even stronger. A 60 kW G-Volt system at a private hospital saves about Rs 52,000 a month.
Complete turnkey delivery: energy audit, plant design, engineering, procurement of panels, inverters and structures, installation, DISCOM approvals, testing, commissioning and long-term O&M. A 250 kW G-Volt plant at a steel fabrication unit saves about Rs 2 lakh a month.
PM Surya Ghar covers residential connections only. Businesses benefit instead from lower power bills, accelerated depreciation on solar assets and net-metering or gross-metering arrangements as per Odisha regulations. Please consult your CA for the tax benefit applicable to you.
A solar pump runs directly on panels to lift water for irrigation, farms, fisheries or community supply, with no diesel or grid power. Surface and submersible pumps are available in a range of HP ratings. Farmers may be eligible for a subsidy under the PM-KUSUM scheme; our team checks current availability in Odisha.
Each light has its own panel, battery, LED and controller. The panel charges the battery during the day, and the light switches on automatically at dusk. They need no trenching or grid wiring and suit roads, campuses, villages, parks and housing colonies.
All 30 districts, from hubs in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela. This includes Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri, Khordha, Rourkela, Sambalpur, Berhampur, Balasore, Angul, Jharsuguda and beyond.
